The “Understanding Fashion: Clothing, Aesthetics, and Cultural Expression” provides a comprehensive study of various categories of fashion and textiles. It is intended as an academic reference for students, teachers, and professionals in the fashion and design industries. The book covers essential topics such as elements and principles of design, design thinking processes, sources of inspiration, cultural & historical influences, along with technological aspects of design, sustainable practices, and fundamental garment construction techniques. However, special emphasis has been placed on integrating Indian textile heritage and traditional knowledge systems with modern approaches, with vision of promoting Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) in higher education. It is structured to develop both the theoretical understanding and practical skills through case studies, visual analysis, and experiential learning.
The Authors
Dr. Ajanta Nayak, M.Sc., M.Phil., Ph.D., currently serves as the Head, Department of Home Science at Shailabala Autonomous Women’s College, Cuttack, Odisha, India. Dr. Nayak had received the prestigious 73rd Kumudini Memorial Award in 2023 and was also honored with the Young Scientist Award by the Nutrition Society of India in 2008. She has authored 10 books and numerous articles published in international journals. Her previous publication, Heritage Textiles and Textile Crafts of India, was showcased at Bharat Tex 2025, the renowned International Textile Fair, New Delhi.
Ms. Sobharani Lakra, currently serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Fashion Design at NIFT Bhubaneswar. Her earlier work, Heritage Textiles and Textile Crafts of India, was prominently featured at Bharat Tex 2025—the prestigious International Textile Fair, New Delhi. Her journey reflects a passionate commitment to fostering a fashion industry that honours cultural traditions, embraces innovation, and promotes sustainable practices.
